Summary: The role of Data Protection SME involves providing temporary support to the Information Assurance function of a large public sector organization during a period of increased demand and organizational change. The successful candidate will act in a Deputy DPO capacity, offering hands-on expertise and strategic leadership in data protection activities. This position is hybrid and requires a strong understanding of UK GDPR and experience in a regulated environment. The contract duration is between 6 to 12 months, classified as inside IR35.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Review, improve, and embed data protection processes and controls
  • Define and formalise escalation routes and governance
  • Support delivery across DSARs, Rectification and erasure requests, FOI matters, and related data protection and disclosure activity
  • Provide strategic problem-solving support within a regulated, operational environment
  • Take ownership of specific projects and workstreams, reducing pressure on senior stakeholders

Key Skills:

  • Demonstrable experience in a Data Protection role
  • Strong, practical knowledge of UK GDPR and information assurance
  • Experience working in policing, law enforcement, or the wider public sector highly desirable
  • Proven track record of reviewing and improving processes during periods of change
  • Comfortable operating within regulated, complex organisational cultures
  • Must be willing and eligible to undergo vetting

Salary (Rate): £65,000.00 yearly

A large public sector organisation operating in a highly regulated, operational environment is seeking a senior Data Protection Subject Matter Expert to provide temporary support to its Information Assurance function. This role has been created to relieve pressure on the existing Data Protection Officer during a period of increased demand, heightened scrutiny, and significant organisational change. The successful candidate will act in a Deputy DPO type capacity, providing hands-on expertise, strategic input, and leadership across data protection activities.
