Summary: The role of Data Protection Paralegal involves supporting a University on a temporary basis, primarily working from home with occasional attendance in the West Midlands. The position requires handling Subject Access Requests and providing guidance on data protection queries in compliance with UK legislation. The ideal candidate should possess relevant experience in data protection within a higher education context.
Key Responsibilities:
- Responding to incoming data protection queries from staff, students, and external parties.
- Managing and responding to Subject Access Requests (SARs) in line with statutory deadlines under UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act.
- Using purview to run system queries and collate relevant documentation across various departments and databases.
- Reviewing and redacting documents appropriately to ensure compliance and accuracy.
- Processing requests for personal data from third parties, ensuring lawful and justified disclosures.
Key Skills:
- Significant experience handling Subject Access Requests.
- Experience within Higher Education is highly desirable.
- Strong understanding of UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018.
- Ability to provide clear and consistent advice in line with internal policies and legislation.

We are proud to be partnering with a University who are looking to appoint a Data Protection Paralegal on an initial 3-month temporary basis. This will be a full-time position based predominantly from home , with attendance required in the West Midlands approximately once per month, and an hourly rate of circa £25 per hour via an Umbrella company.
The ideal candidate will have significant experience handling Subject Access Requests.
Duties will include (but are not limited to):
- Responding to incoming data protection queries from staff, students, and external parties, providing clear and consistent advice in line with internal policies and legislation
- Managing and responding to SARs in line with statutory deadlines under UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act, using purview to run system queries and collate relevant documentation across various departments and databases
- Reviewing and redacting documents appropriately, ensuring compliance and accuracy
- Processing requests for personal data from third parties, including the police and other authorities, ensuring all such disclosures are lawful, justified, and fully documented
Experience required:
- Experience within Higher Education is highly desirable
- Experience dealing with subject access requests
- A strong understanding of UK GDPR, the Data Protection Act 2018, and their application in a complex organisation
Working hours: 37 hours per week Monday – Friday, 9am-5pm
