Summary: The Data Protection Officer role is a 6-month contract position within a policing organization, focusing on ensuring compliance with Data Protection and Freedom of Information legislation. The officer will serve as the primary contact for the Information Commissioner’s Office and oversee data breaches while advising on privacy risks. This position requires collaboration across all levels of the force and involves leading the Information Disclosure Team. The role is hybrid, allowing for flexible remote working arrangements.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the Force's Data Protection Officer and Freedom of Information Officer, acting on behalf of the Chief Constable.
  • Liaise directly with the ICO on breach reporting, investigations, and regulatory interpretation.
  • Lead and manage the Information Disclosure Team, ensuring service standards and statutory compliance.
  • Provide strategic advice across departments on data sharing, privacy impact assessments, and compliance.
  • Develop and implement internal training on data protection and FOI legislation for all staff levels.
  • Create and maintain records for data breaches, information sharing agreements, and statutory disclosures.

Key Skills:

  • Qualified in Data Protection (must include Part 2; Part 3 is essential unless directly relevant experience can be demonstrated).
  • Proven leadership experience within a data governance, FOI, or compliance setting.
  • Strong working knowledge of police systems, statutory disclosures, and ICO regulation.
  • Experience handling complex SARs, EIRs, and third-party legal information requests.
  • Strategic communicator with the ability to influence at all levels.
  • Desirable: Previous experience within policing or criminal justice environments.
  • Desirable: Sufficient familiarity with S55 breach handling, civil disclosure procedures, and ICO determinations.

Location: Hybrid (Office base with flexible remote working)

Rate: £30.99 per hour (Umbrella) | Annual Equivalent: £45,147 (PO2)

Contract Duration: Until 12/12/2025

Hours: 37 hours per week (Monday–Friday)

Department: Governance & Compliance

We are seeking a skilled and experienced Data Protection Officer to join a policing organisation within their Governance & Compliance team. This is a critical role that ensures the organisation meets its legal and ethical obligations under Data Protection and Freedom of Information legislation. You’ll be working across all levels of the force, acting as the key point of contact for the Information Commissioner’s Office, overseeing data breaches, advising on privacy risks, and ensuring the force remains compliant with Data Protection Act (Part 2 & 3) and Freedom of Information Act 2000.
