Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct VMware-to-Proxmox migrations with a focus on minimizing downtime.
  • Manage virtualisation environments, including VM configuration, storage, and networking.
  • Utilize Proxmox VE architecture for clustering and backup strategies.
  • Perform Linux systems administration and troubleshoot related issues.
  • Convert disk formats and utilize migration tools effectively.

Detailed Description From Employer:

The successful applicant should have had a successful VMware-to-Proxmox migration or a very similar proven track record. They will require a blend of virtualisation expertise, Linux fluency, and practical migration experience. £350 - £425 p/d Hybrid working pattern Location: Birmingham sites

Core Technical Skills

  • Strong Virtualisation Background
  • Deep understanding of VMware vSphere/ESXi environments, including VM configuration, storage, and networking.
  • Familiarity with Proxmox VE architecture, including clustering, storage models, and native backup tools like Proxmox Backup Server.
  • Linux Systems Administration
  • Proxmox is Debian-based, so comfort with Linux CLI, shell scripting, and system services is essential.
  • Ability to troubleshoot boot issues, kernel modules, and hardware compatibility.
  • Migration Tooling & Disk Conversion
  • Experience with converting VMDK to QCOW2 or RAW formats.
  • Familiarity with tools like qemu-img, virt-v2v, or Proxmox's built-in import wizard
  • Equally able to build new Windows 2019 Servers rebuilding services and systems where needed.
  • Networking & Firewall Configuration
  • Understanding of virtual bridges, VLANs, and Proxmox's firewall model.
  • Ability to replicate VMware's virtual networking setup in Proxmox.
  • Backup & Recovery Planning
  • Knowledge of backup strategies pre- and post-migration.
