Role Overview
The Data Engineer (Power BI Specialist) focuses on the semantic and reporting layer, ensuring that Power BI models and reports are well-structured, performant, and aligned to upstream curated data sources.
The role emphasises clean separation between data processing and reporting.
Key Responsibilities
- Analyse and maintain Power BI datasets, semantic models, and reports.
- Refactor Power BI models to consume curated, upstream data sources.
- Ensure business logic is appropriately implemented upstream rather than Embedded in reports.
- Validate report behavior, measures, and refresh processes following data model changes.
- Perform regression testing and support data reconciliation activities.
- Collaborate with business analysts and data engineers to ensure accurate interpretation of business rules.
- Promote best practices for Power BI model design and governance.
Skills & Experience
- Strong experience with Power BI, including datasets, semantic models, and measures.
- Good understanding of data modelling and relational data concepts.
- Ability to work with SQL-based data sources.
- Experience supporting reporting in enterprise or public-sector environments.
- Exposure to AI-assisted tooling (eg Power BI Copilot) is desirable but not essential.
