Overview
X4 Technology are partnered with a global energy trading firm on a major transformation of its Data Exchange platform - the technical data backbone supporting physical commodities trading globally.
The platform automates, reconciles and standardises transaction workflows across physical crude oil and refined petroleum products, providing a single, trusted source of data across the trading ecosystem.
Role Responsibilities
Joining as a contract Principal AI Engineer, you'll lead the design and delivery of AI-powered capabilities across the Data Exchange platform, combining deep expertise in AI, LLMs and intelligent automation with a strong foundation in data engineering.
You'll own the full solution lifecycle - from identifying high-value AI use cases and solution design through to development, deployment and optimisation - delivering production-grade AI capabilities that improve engineering productivity, automate complex processes and increase operational efficiency.
A key focus will be developing AI agents and intelligent automation, including using AI to reverse-engineer legacy systems, accelerate migration programmes and automate pipeline generation.
Requirements for the Principal AI Engineer
- Extensive hands-on experience building production-grade AI and LLM solutions, with strong expertise across modern AI/GenAI technologies
- Strong Databricks and data engineering expertise, with the ability to design and build scalable AI solutions across complex enterprise data environments
- Proven experience developing AI agents, intelligent automation or agentic solutions, with a track record of taking concepts from prototype through to production
- Strong end-to-end technical ownership, covering requirements, architecture, development, testing, deployment and ongoing optimisation
- Excellent stakeholder management and problem-solving skills, with the ability to quickly understand complex business domains and translate requirements into practical, measurable AI solutions

Initial 6-month contract with long-term programme scope, £900-1000/day (Inside IR35), hybrid in London.
