Summary: The role of Mechanical Engineer involves working within a precision manufacturing business in Birmingham, focusing on the development and maintenance of high-value, low-volume components for the naval marine sector. The engineer will collaborate with the Design Manager and Engineering Standards Manager to ensure accurate data flow and customer satisfaction. Responsibilities include interpreting specifications, creating technical documentation, and leading small teams to deliver engineering solutions. The position is initially a 6-month contract with the possibility of extension, classified as outside IR35 or PAYE FTC.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Interpret customer specifications and create solutions that fully satisfy requirements.
  • Use appropriate valve technologies for a wide range of applications.
  • Create technical documentation to demonstrate sound engineering practice and compliance.
  • Establish and maintain design philosophies to support the valve design process.
  • Create and maintain design calculations to validate new designs and products.
  • Introduce appropriate validation and test procedures for prototypes.
  • Produce reports and project plans, autonomously or with the appropriate project lead.
  • Participate in cross-functional teams and collaborate with the engineering team.
  • Ensure continued communication and good relationships with external and internal customers.
  • Liaise with and provide technical support to customers and suppliers.
  • Represent the business at customer and supplier meetings when necessary.
  • Lead small teams to deliver on commitments.
  • Assist with production-based issues.
  • Create and maintain product designs and drawings in Solidworks and Draftsight.
  • Support the Engineering department in detailing designs and updating production database.
  • Carry out any other duties appropriate to this post, as necessary or as requested.

Key Skills:

  • 10 years’ experience in a similar position.
  • Mechanical Engineering degree or related engineering discipline required.
  • Competent level of knowledge of engineering and technology principles and practices.
  • Experience creating and maintaining accurate engineering records, drawings, design calculations, and files.
  • Ability to conduct and undertake mechanical analysis.
  • Experience in valve design, hydraulic system designs, oil and gas, or naval marine.
  • Experience of Mathcad to create engineering calculations is desirable.
  • Ability to influence product direction.
  • Eligibility for SC Clearance.

Working within the Engineering Team, the Mechanical Engineer will be responsible for maintaining and developing the existing company product range and creating solutions to customer problems from within the naval marine sector. The Mechanical Engineer, in conjunction with the Design Manager, and the Engineering Standards Manager will be responsible for facilitating the flow of reliable, accurate and readily available data, to both internal and external customers. Mechanical Engineer x5 Job Description Interpret customer specifications and create solutions that fully satisfy requirements. Use appropriate valve technologies for a wide range of applications. Use correct standards, design codes and pressure vessel codes where appropriate (Def Stans, BS, ISO, DN, PD etc) Create technical documentation to demonstrate sound engineering practice and compliance. Establish and maintain design philosophies to support of the valve design process and maintain traceability. Create and maintain design calculations to validate new designs and products. Introduce appropriate validation and test procedures and programmes for prototypes. Produce reports and project plans, autonomously or with the appropriate project lead. Experience of Mathcad to create engineering calculations is desirable Experience of influencing product direction Due to the nature of the work, all candidates MUST be eligible for SC Clearance
