Summary: Rubicon Consulting is seeking multiple Contact Design Approval Engineers (CDAE) for various design disciplines, primarily focusing on substation layout and physical design. The role involves reviewing technical designs and ensuring compliance with National Grid standards while coordinating with other engineering disciplines. The position is based in Manchester with a hybrid working arrangement, requiring 2-3 days in the office on a rolling 6-month contract. The role is classified as outside IR35.
Key Responsibilities:
- Focus on substation layout and physical design (400kV/275kV/132kV).
- Review single line diagrams, general arrangements, equipment layouts, busbar configurations, clearances, and earthing.
- Ensure designs meet National Grid standards, TP141, ENA, IEC, etc.
- Coordinate with secondary, civil, and protection disciplines.
- Cover protection & control, SCADA, telecoms, and auxiliary systems.
- Review schematics, wiring diagrams, relay settings, CT/VT sizing, SAS/IEC 61850 configurations.
- Provide assurance that schemes meet resilience, redundancy, and operability requirements.
- Responsible for civil and structural design assurance on substations and cable routes.
- Review foundations, buildings, trenches, access roads, drainage, fire protection, bunding, and steelwork.
- Check compliance with CDM, geotechnical, environmental, and NG civil standards.
- Interface with primary plant to ensure loadings and spatial requirements are met.
Key Skills:
- Experience in substation layout and physical design.
- Knowledge of National Grid standards and relevant engineering codes.
- Ability to review and interpret technical diagrams and schematics.
- Experience in civil and structural design assurance.
- Strong coordination skills with various engineering disciplines.
- Understanding of resilience, redundancy, and operability requirements.
- Familiarity with CDM, geotechnical, and environmental standards.

Civils CDAE Responsible for civil and structural design assurance on substations and cable routes.
