Detailed Description From Employer:

Content Designer / Web Publisher - 2/3 days a month in Newcastle - £400-£450 per day - 3 months

My client is a global IT consultancy. They are looking for a Content Designer with strong web publishing skills to join a central government client of theirs.

We are seeking a meticulous and dependable Content Designer/Publisher to support the delivery of high-quality, accessible digital content. While the role carries the title of Content Designer, the core responsibilities are more aligned with web content publishing-working closely with developers and subject matter experts (SMEs) to prepare, format, and publish content to a hand-coded website. This position differs from traditional content design roles in that it involves limited user research or structural rewriting. Instead, the focus is on ensuring that content provided by SMEs is implemented accurately, adheres to GDS guidelines, and meets WCAG 2.2 AA accessibility standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review and prepare content provided by SMEs, applying GDS content standards and plain English principles wherever possible.
  • Collaborate with developers to implement content changes on a hand-coded site.
  • Action stakeholder content updates-often under tight deadlines-with a focus on precision and consistency.
  • Publish time-sensitive content updates, maintaining version control and audit trails where required.
  • Coordinate with SMEs to ensure factual accuracy and appropriateness of all published content.
  • Secure policy and legal approvals for published content as needed.
  • Apply accessibility best practices, including semantic HTML, logical heading structures, appropriate use of alt text, and meaningful link descriptions in compliance with WCAG 2.2 AA standards.
  • Manage multiple concurrent publishing tasks, prioritising workload to ensure timely delivery and adherence to quality standards.
  • Understand and reflect basic user needs in the publishing process, even when full user research or iteration is not feasible.

Skills and Experience

  • Proven experience preparing and publishing web content in alignment with GDS standards and style guides.
  • Strong attention to detail and a solid grasp of plain English and content clarity.
  • Practical knowledge of WCAG 2.2 AA accessibility guidelines and experience applying them to web content.
  • Ability to write, edit, and format content in HTML and work directly with developers on hand-coded websites.
  • Effective collaboration with cross-functional teams, including SMEs, developers, and policy/legal stakeholders.
  • Excellent organisational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities under pressure.
  • Previous experience publishing content in a UK Government or regulated environment.
  • Familiarity with version control systems or publishing workflows in code repositories.
  • Experience working in an agile delivery team environment.
