Summary: The Consultant Geriatrician role at County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust involves joining a dynamic team focused on enhancing patient care for older adults across various clinical settings. The position requires collaboration with colleagues to develop and maintain elderly care services while also participating in teaching and research activities. The Trust is expanding its consultant workforce to improve service delivery and aims to provide a comprehensive 7-day service. Candidates will have the opportunity to engage in clinical work, educational supervision, and contribute to service development initiatives.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Undertake clinical work in conjunction with colleagues to maintain and develop elderly care services.
  • Provide comprehensive clinical services alongside Consultant colleagues.
  • Participate in the postgraduate teaching of medical staff and undergraduates.
  • Supervise junior medical staff and contribute to their professional development.
  • Engage in clinical audit and governance activities.
  • Participate in research activities and apply for funding as needed.
  • Ensure effective use of resources and accountability to the Clinical Director.
  • Cover colleagues in their absence to ensure continuous patient care.
  • Participate in on-call commitments, including GIM on-call.

Key Skills:

  • Full registration with the GMC and a license to practice.
  • MBChB or equivalent, MRCP, and CCT in geriatric medicine or equivalent training.
  • Good clinical skills in managing acutely unwell medical patients.
  • Experience in teaching and supervising medical trainees.
  • Ability to work within a multi-disciplinary team and communicate effectively.
  • Previous management experience or formal management training.
  • Evidence of involvement in audit and quality improvement projects.
  • Research experience and understanding of clinical effectiveness work.
  • Commitment to continuing professional development (CPD).
