Key Responsibilities of a Contracts and Subcontracts Manager

  • Lead commercial and execution management strategies across customers and key subcontractors.
  • Create, execute and manage domestic and international contract types including Cost, Incentive and Firm Fixed.
  • Lead contract negotiations and develop associated contracting strategies and agreements.
  • Identify commercial risks and implement effective mitigation as part of the overall risk plan.
  • Manage contract change control, flow-downs and cross-functional commercial support throughout programme life.
  • Manage financial aspects of contracts including forecasting, milestone plans and timely claim submissions.
  • Act as the commercial point of contact and subject matter expert for customers and subcontractors.
  • Contribute to business capture strategies and support go/no-go decisions through to contract closure.

Key Skills required for a Contracts and Subcontracts Manager

  • Experience reviewing, drafting and managing contractual documents in a defence environment.
  • Proven commercial and contract support experience across defence bidding and programme execution.
  • Strong knowledge of commercial contract types including Cost Type, Incentive Type and Firm Fixed.
  • Solid understanding of commercial risk management and risk mitigation strategies.
  • Strong commercial awareness including business principles and relevant governing law.
  • Excellent communicator with the ability to build relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to work cross-functionally in a multi-disciplinary team under pressure.
  • Self-motivated and capable of working independently with minimal direction.

Additional Skills (not essential)

  • Accreditation in Commercial and/or Supply Chain Management.
  • Programme management skills including risk management, programme gating and metrics.
  • Proven track record in problem solving and commercial dispute resolution.
  • Experience working with international suppliers or customers.
  • Experience in financial management within a contracts or commercial function.
  • Familiarity with business process management tools such as IPDS, SAP or similar.
