Summary: The role of Civil/Structural Engineer focuses on the conservation and structural integrity of heritage and listed building facades in London. Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct structural surveys and assessments of heritage and listed building facades, focusing on stone and masonry.
  • Develop and deliver repair, strengthening, and conservation strategies in line with best practice and statutory requirements.
  • Prepare detailed technical survey reports, specifications, and sketches for remedial works.
  • Collaborate with clients, project managers, building surveyors, conservation officers, and contractors to ensure sensitive and compliant interventions.
  • Provide guidance on structural safety, and deterioration mechanisms of historic materials.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant British Standards, Eurocodes, and heritage conservation guidelines where applicable.
  • Assist in managing the projects, including site inspections and quality assurance.

Key Skills:

  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) status with ICE or IStructE, or working towards chartership within 12 months.
  • Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering (BEng or MEng) from an accredited institution.
  • Minimum 8 years’ experience in structural engineering, with experience of heritage and/or listed building facades.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Portland Stone, natural stone masonry, and traditional facade construction techniques.
  • Familiarity with UK Building Regulations, British Standards (BS 6399, BS 8110), Eurocodes, and heritage conservation guidelines.
  • Strong technical report writing and communication skills.
  • Proficiency in appropriate software including Word, Excel and Bluebeam Revu.
  • Knowledge of deterioration mechanisms in stone.
  • Experience with façade retention or strengthening projects.
  • Ideally possess suitable Safety Harness & Inspection Training Certification for use in MEWPs albeit training can be provided.

About the Role

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in masonry facades, particularly Portland Stone and other traditional materials used in historic architecture.
