Role Summary & Scope
You will be responsible for producing detailed, multi-disciplinary highway designs from early-stage concepts through to final construction packages.
Your day-to-day focus will be hands-on 3D modeling, drawing production, and providing direct technical support to both the design and on-site construction teams.
The design scope of works will include, but not be limited to:
- Pavement Design: Modeling complex structural pavement build-ups and resurfacing layouts.
- Kerbing & Footways: Detailed modeling of custom kerb lines, channel lines, and footway profiles.
- Earthworks: Corridor earthworks, cut-and-fill calculations, and surface-to-surface volume analysis.
- Drainage: Modeling highway drainage networks, attenuation, gullies, and catchpit runs.
- Section 278 (S278) Works: Designing compliant highway modifications to interface seamlessly with existing local authority networks.
Key Responsibilities
- Hands-on 3D Modeling: Develop detailed AutoCAD Civil 3D models, including alignments, profiles, assemblies, corridors, and finished surfaces.
- Drawing & Detail Production: Prepare and update technical drawings, construction details, schedules, and material specifications.
- Drainage & Pavement Modeling: Assist in the hands-on design and modeling of highway drainage networks and pavement layouts.
- Traffic & Signage Design: Utilize KeyLines and KeySigns software to design compliant road markings, signing schedules, and traffic management layouts.
- Construction Support: Work collaboratively with the co-located construction team, resolving technical design queries and updating redline/as-built drawings.
- Standards Compliance: Ensure all design models and drawings comply with relevant technical standards, local authority requirements, and client specifications.
Requirements
- Technical Expertise: Advanced, expert-level AutoCAD Civil 3D skills are essential (corridors, earthworks, drainage modeling, and complex junctions).
- Highways Knowledge: A strong understanding of highway and traffic engineering principles with a proven track record in a dedicated highways design role.
- S278 Experience: Strong familiarity with Section 278 delivery and local authority design approval processes.
- Industry Standards: Good working knowledge of DMRB, MCHW, Traffic Signs Manual, and the TfL Streets Toolkit.
- Software Proficiency: Experience using KeyLines and KeySigns for road markings and signage design.
- Education: HNC/HND or Degree in Civil Engineering (or equivalent technical design qualification).
- Experience: Minimum of 3-5 years of dedicated experience in a civil infrastructure or highway design capacity.
