What does a case handler contractor do?

Case Handler contractors are engaged to manage, investigate, and resolve individual cases within regulated complaint handling, claims processing, remediation, and compliance review programmes. The work involves reviewing case files against regulatory criteria, conducting fair and thorough assessments, making outcome decisions within defined frameworks, and producing clearly written determination letters. Case Handler contractors are most commonly engaged by financial services firms running large-scale remediation or complaint handling programmes, by the Financial Ombudsman Service, and by insurance firms processing complex claims. Demand typically surges when regulatory enforcement actions or thematic reviews require firms to process large volumes of cases within tight deadlines.

Case Handler contractors need strong analytical and written communication skills, combined with the ability to apply regulatory criteria consistently across high volumes of cases. Experience with FCA complaint handling rules (DISP) and familiarity with the regulatory framework relevant to the specific remediation programme are widely expected. Proficiency with case management systems and the ability to maintain quality and consistency under throughput pressure are essential.
