BI Architect

Posted 2 days ago by Nigel Frank International

Summary: The Senior BI Architect will be responsible for designing and governing the business intelligence ecosystem for a client, focusing on data architecture, analytics engineering, and stakeholder strategy. This role involves creating a technical vision for data modeling and warehousing, ensuring the delivery of trusted insights to the business. The architect will lead the implementation of BI tools and platforms while establishing data governance practices and mentoring team members. This position is ideal for someone with extensive experience in enterprise-scale BI solutions and a cloud-agnostic mindset.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and own the enterprise BI architecture, including data warehouse/lakehouse structures, semantic layers, and reporting frameworks
  • Define and enforce data modeling standards (dimensional modeling, star/snowflake schemas, medallion architecture) to ensure consistency and performance across BI assets
  • Lead the selection, implementation, and governance of BI tools and platforms (e.g., Power BI, Tableau, Looker) and their integration with the broader data stack
  • Architect and lead migrations to Microsoft Fabric, including OneLake, lakehouses/warehouses, Data Factory pipelines, and Power BI semantic models
  • Design solutions that remain cloud-agnostic where appropriate, ensuring architecture isn't unnecessarily locked to a single vendor and can integrate across AWS, Azure, and GCP data sources
  • Partner with data engineering to design scalable, reliable data pipelines that feed BI systems
  • Establish data governance practices - access controls, data quality standards, metadata management, and documentation
  • Translate business requirements into scalable technical solutions, working closely with analysts, product, and executive stakeholders
  • Mentor BI developers and analysts on architecture best practices, performance tuning, and self-service enablement
  • Evaluate emerging BI/analytics technologies and make recommendations to keep the architecture future-proof
  • Own performance optimization for large-scale dashboards, semantic models, and queries
  • Drive self-service analytics adoption through well-governed, reusable data models

Key Skills:

  • 7+ years of experience in business intelligence, data architecture, or analytics engineering, including prior BI development experience
  • Proven track record architecting enterprise-scale BI solutions from the ground up
  • Hands-on experience leading multiple end-to-end migration projects onto Microsoft Fabric (OneLake, Lakehouse/Warehouse, Data Factory, Power BI semantic models), including planning cutover strategy and minimizing disruption to existing reporting
  • Deep expertise in dimensional modeling and modern data warehouse/lakehouse design
  • Cloud-agnostic mindset - comfortable architecting solutions that span or move between AWS, Azure, and GCP rather than being tied to a single ecosystem
  • Advanced proficiency with Power BI (DAX, semantic modeling) and working knowledge of other major BI platforms (Tableau, Looker)
  • Strong SQL skills and familiarity with ELT/ETL tooling (e.g., dbt, Data Factory, Fivetran, Airflow)
  • Experience with data governance, security, and role-based access frameworks
  • Excellent communication skills - able to translate between technical architecture and business needs
  • Experience mentoring or leading technical teams

Detailed Description From Employer:

About the Role

On behalf of our client, [Client Company Name], we're hiring a Senior BI Architect to design, govern, and scale their business intelligence ecosystem. You'll own the technical vision for how data is modeled, warehoused, and delivered to the business - turning raw data into trusted, decision-ready insight. This is a high-impact role for someone who thrives at the intersection of data architecture, analytics engineering, and stakeholder strategy.

What You'll Do

What You'll Bring

Nice to Have

  • Experience migrating off legacy platforms (e.g., Synapse, SSAS, Snowflake, Redshift, BigQuery) onto Fabric
  • Experience with Python or scripting for data automation
  • Familiarity with CI/CD for analytics (version-controlled BI development, Fabric deployment pipelines)
  • Background in a specific industry vertical (finance, retail, healthcare, SaaS, etc.)
  • Relevant certifications (e.g., Microsoft Certified: Fabric Analytics Engineer, Power BI, Snowflake SnowPro, AWS/GCP data certifications)
