Essential Requirements

  • Qualified accountant (CCAB/CIMA/ACCA/ACA/CIPFA or equivalent experience).
  • Degree level education or equivalent professional experience.
  • Significant experience within a complex finance environment.
  • Strong financial management, reporting and forecasting expertise.
  • Experience supporting budget holders and senior stakeholders.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Advanced Excel and financial systems experience.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills with the ability to explain complex financial information to non-finance audiences.
  • Experience supervising or mentoring staff.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and deliver to tight deadlines.

Desirable

  • Experience working within healthcare, public sector or large capital-intensive organisations.
  • Knowledge of capital accounting and asset management.
  • Experience supporting external audits.
  • Understanding of capital investment appraisal methodologies and business case development.
  • Experience of ERP implementation or finance system transformation projects.

The Role

Reporting to the Head of Capital, you will be responsible for supporting the financial management of capital budgets, strategic projects and investment programmes.

You will provide accurate financial information, challenge assumptions, support business case development and ensure compliance with financial governance requirements.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Capital Financial Management & Reporting
  • Produce accurate and timely monthly capital management accounts, forecasts and financial reports.
  • Monitor capital expenditure against approved budgets and identify risks, variances and opportunities.
  • Prepare detailed financial commentary and present findings to senior leaders and stakeholders.
  • Support year-end financial processes, including asset accounting, depreciation, reconciliations and statutory reporting.
  • Lead financial reporting for major capital and estate projects.
  • Business Partnering
  • Work closely with senior managers, budget holders and project teams to provide financial advice and challenge.
  • Support the development, appraisal and review of capital business cases and investment proposals.
  • Help prioritise capital projects through robust analysis and financial evaluation.
  • Provide financial insight to support strategic decision-making.
  • Capital Planning & Governance
  • Support the annual capital planning and budget-setting process.
  • Maintain capital forecasts, cashflow projections and financial plans.
  • Monitor approved schemes to ensure expenditure remains within agreed financial envelopes.
  • Ensure appropriate governance, controls and audit trails are maintained.
  • Technical Accounting
  • Lead and maintain fixed asset accounting activities.
  • Manage asset registers, depreciation calculations and balance sheet reconciliations.
  • Support annual accounts production and external audit requirements.
  • Apply relevant accounting standards and capital finance principles.
  • Team Leadership
  • Support, mentor and develop finance team members.
  • Promote continuous improvement across financial processes and reporting.
  • Deliver training and guidance to non-finance managers to improve financial understanding and compliance.
