Summary: The Assistant Management Accountant (AMA) role is a fixed-term position within the Finance & Procurement Team, focusing on ensuring the accuracy of month-end postings and timely reporting. The AMA will collaborate with the Management Accountant to support various financial processes, including variance analysis and funding requests. This role also involves ownership of the Purchase Order process and providing ad-hoc support to the finance team. The position requires a proactive approach and strong technical skills in finance and reporting tools.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Take ownership of monthly Management Accounts postings, including Accruals, Prepayments, and Reclasses.
  • Perform Balance Sheet Reconciliations and assist in the submission of the Trial Balance to DESNZ.
  • Monitor variances and assist with supporting commentary for optimal use of company funds.
  • Prepare monthly summaries in Power BI for presentation to the CFO.
  • Work with the Management Accountant to prepare and send External and Internal Reporting Packs.
  • Ensure accurate preparation and submission of non-Levy and Capital funding requests.
  • Identify opportunities to streamline processes within the FP&A Area and Finance & Procurement Team.
  • Own the Purchase Order process and Supplier Management in SAGE.
  • Assist with year-end processes and audit requests.
  • Provide flexible support for ad-hoc requirements or urgent projects.

Key Skills:

  • A fully qualified or finalist accountant with a recognised accounting body (CIMA, ACCA, CIPFA, ICAEW, ICAI, or ICAS).
  • Commercial experience in a finance role.
  • Extensive experience with Microsoft Excel and user experience of an ERP system/software.
  • Willingness to learn and develop expertise in business intelligence platforms.
  • Ability to establish relationships across the business.
  • Flexibility to meet challenges in a growing business.
  • Proactive attitude with ownership of work.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience using Data Visualisation Dashboards is desirable.
  • Previous experience of using SAGE X3 (ERP System) is desirable.

Role Summary

The Assistant Management Accountant (AMA) sits in the wider FP&A subsection if the Finance & Procurement Team. The main purpose of the AMA role is to collaborate with the Management Accountant (MA) to ensure accuracy of Month-End postings, and timely preparation and distribution of the various reporting packs, providing a solid foundation from which the FP&A area can Business Partner constructively and effectively. The AMA will also support the Accounts Analysts from a Purchase Order Management perspective, to ensure smooth running of the Accounts Payable function.

Key Responsibilities

  • Month-End
  • Take ownership of the monthly Management Accounts postings, primarily Accruals, Prepayments and any Reclasses required
  • Perform Balance Sheet Reconciliations, to understand any differences and how any reconciling items will be resolved.
  • Assist the Management Accountant (MA) in submission of the Trial Balance to DESNZ (Government Department)
  • Variance Analysis
  • Work with the wider FP&A Team to monitor variances, analyse drivers and causes, and assist with supporting commentary, to allow optimum use of company funds
  • Monthly CFO presentation
  • Assist in the preparation of the monthly summaries in Power BI for Operational Costs, Capital Costs and specific views per scheme, for presentation to the CFO
  • Reporting Packs
  • Work with MA to prepare and send External Reporting Packs to DESNZ and Internal packs to departments
  • Provide additional tailored support to answer Departmental queries where required
  • Funding Request Management
  • Ensure non-Levy and Capital funding requests are prepared accurately, submitted and settled by DESNZ, to ensure work carried out is billed on a regular basis
  • Process Improvements
  • Using curiosity, work with the FP&A Area, and wider Finance & Procurement Team, to identify opportunities to streamline processes
  • Ownership of PO process
  • Own the Purchase Order, Purchase Order Request and Supplier Management in SAGE
  • Audit & Year-End Support
  • Assist on the year-end process and any Interim and Ful Year audit requests
  • Ad-hoc Support
  • Provide flexible support to the wider Finance and Procurement teams on any ad-hoc requirements or urgent projects. Where required, provide peer support and coaching to less experienced team members.

Essential Qualifications & Experience

  • A fully qualified or finalist accountant with a recognised accounting body i.e., CIMA, ACCA; CIPFA; ICAEW; ICAI or ICAS or an equivalent qualification
  • Commercial experience working in a finance role
