Summary: We are seeking a Senior Accounts Assistant with experience in the upstream oil & gas sector to support financial operations for a medium-sized operator in London. This 6-month contract role is outside IR35 and requires a strong understanding of upstream cost structures and compliance with the UK fiscal regime. The position involves managing supplier invoices, performing reconciliations, and supporting month-end close processes. The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 5 years’ experience in finance/accounting roles within the sector.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage and process supplier invoices related to exploration, production, and operational activities
  • Ensure accurate coding to cost centres, AFE structures, and JV accounts
  • Perform monthly reconciliations for bank accounts, supplier ledgers, and intercompany balances
  • Support month-end close with journal postings, accruals, and variance analysis
  • Prepare and submit VAT returns, ensuring upstream-specific treatment is correctly applied
  • Assist with corporate tax and fiscal filings, liaising with external advisors as required
  • Reconcile balance sheet accounts, including suspense, accruals, and prepayments
  • Assist with year-end audits, providing data packs and transaction support
  • Support internal and external reporting obligations (JV partners, HMRC, auditors)
  • Work closely with the Financial Controller and operations team to ensure financial data aligns with field activity

Key Skills:

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in finance/accounting roles within upstream oil & gas
  • Strong working knowledge of UK VAT, O&G cost allocation principles, and fiscal reporting
  • Familiarity with JV accounting, AFEs, and cost recovery processes
  • Proficient with ERP systems such as SAP, Oracle, or Sun
  • Advanced Excel skills – must be comfortable with reconciliations and analysis
  • Strong attention to detail, with the ability to work independently
  • Immediate availability or short-notice start preferred
