About Our ABAP Contract Roles in Manchester
What does a abap contractor do?
As a contract ABAP, you are hired to develop, enhance, and maintain custom applications, reports, interfaces, conversions, enhancements, and forms within SAP ERP environments using ABAP and ABAP Objects. Contract engagements typically arise during SAP implementation programmes, S/4HANA migrations, and ongoing support and enhancement of existing SAP landscapes. The work involves writing custom code for RICEFW objects, developing user exits and BAdIs, building ALV reports, and creating interfaces between SAP and external systems. ABAP contractors are found wherever SAP is deployed at scale, including manufacturing, utilities, retail, public sector, and financial services.
Strong ABAP and ABAP Objects programming skills are the core requirement, including experience with the ABAP development workbench, data dictionary, and debugging tools. Experience with SAP modules relevant to the engagement, such as FI/CO, MM, SD, or PP, is expected to ensure the developer understands the business processes their code supports. For S/4HANA migration projects, knowledge of the ABAP for HANA programming model, CDS views, and the RAP (RESTful Application Programming) model is increasingly required. Experience with SAP Fiori and OData services is valued for front-end integration work.
What is the market like for abap contractors?
ABAP contracting remains a strong and active market driven by the volume of SAP S/4HANA migration programmes across UK enterprises. The mandatory migration deadline from legacy ECC systems is generating sustained demand for ABAP developers who can support custom code remediation, conversion programmes, and new development on the HANA platform. Traditional ABAP skills remain essential for maintaining and enhancing existing SAP landscapes, while the market increasingly rewards contractors who can work with modern ABAP for HANA techniques. Rates have remained firm reflecting the combination of deep SAP knowledge and software development skills required.
What is the contracting market like in Manchester?
Manchester has established itself as the strongest contractor hub outside London, supported by a diverse economy spanning financial services, technology, media, and the public sector. MediaCityUK at Salford Quays anchors a cluster of digital, creative, and broadcasting employers, while Spinningfields and the wider city centre house the financial and professional services concentration. Several major insurers and banks run significant operations from Manchester, and the technology sector has matured considerably, with both established firms and scale-ups competing for software engineering, cloud, and data contractors. The rate gap with London has narrowed over the past few years as employer competition for experienced contractors in the city has intensified, and for many disciplines Manchester now offers comparable depth of opportunity at a materially lower cost base.
How much do abap contractors usually earn in Manchester?
Contract rates for abap roles in Manchester typically range from £500 to £850 per day, depending on the scope of the role, required expertise, and the delivery expectations of the engagement.
