Summary: The Senior Piping Designer role involves supporting the design and delivery of construction projects for a leading midstream oil and gas company. The position requires facilitating project design and drafting activities, ensuring the successful completion of project-related deliverables. The candidate will work closely with project managers and various stakeholders to meet project requirements efficiently. This is a 12-month contract position based in Houston, TX, with a focus on piping design within the oil and gas sector.
Key Responsibilities:
- Facilitate project design and drafting, including assigning equipment, instrument, and valve tagging numbers; assigning piping line numbers; resolving drawing development issues; and drafting changes to record drawings
- Prepare process flow diagrams (PFDs), piping and instrument diagrams (P&IDs), general equipment layouts, facility plot plans, and equipment and instrument lists for plant, pipeline, and related facilities construction projects
- Assist in the development of Project Scopes, Engineering/Design Scopes, and Construction Scopes of Work for use in establishing contracts with third parties
- Attend project meetings to understand customer needs and scope definitions, and to provide technical input toward efficient and effective designs
- Assist in reviewing man hour estimates and work schedules to ensure efficient project execution
- Coordinate distribution of design packages to ensure stakeholder input and timely information exchange
- Provide design and drafting services for time- and budget-critical projects, as well as for the preliminary development of potential projects
- Communicate with vendors regarding material quotes and availability; create parts lists through material take-offs
- Develop material data sheets and generate material requisitions for Project Manager approval
- Maintain records of documents and correspondence related to technical design issues throughout project development
- Participate in the development and maintenance of Company standard drawings
- Assist in developing and implementing specifications and procedures to reduce costs in the creation and maintenance of drawings and documentation
- Coordinate with Project Managers, purchasing agents, inspectors, engineering contractors, and construction contractors on design drawing content, materials, and construction issues
- Generate Pre-Assessment Letters (PAL) for in-service weld approvals where required
- Provide drafting support for daily system operations and coordinate with CADD Operators
- Provide guidance to enhance others' ability to obtain required information using departmentally developed tools and methods
Key Skills:
- Demonstrated experience in piping design and drafting within the oil & gas, pipeline, or utilities sector
- Proficiency in producing PFDs, P&IDs, plot plans, and equipment/instrument lists
- Experience coordinating multi-disciplinary project teams and interfacing with engineering contractors and construction contractors
- Familiarity with material take-offs, material data sheets, and requisition processes
- Strong working knowledge of piping design standards and drafting practices
- Proficient in CAD/CADD software; experience with industry-standard design tools
- Ability to manage multiple priorities across concurrent projects in a fast-paced environment
- Strong communication skills with ability to interface effectively with project managers, vendors, and cross-functional teams
- Detail-oriented with a commitment to accuracy in technical documentation
