Summary: The Wells Engineering Competency Assessor is responsible for verifying the capabilities of wells engineering staff through the Wells Engineering Capability Assessment (WECA) program. This role involves conducting assessments, providing feedback, and ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements while supporting the development of engineers within bp's Operating Management System. The position requires extensive experience in drilling and completions engineering, along with strong leadership and coaching skills. The assessor will work globally across multiple time zones to facilitate assessments and foster relationships with regional leadership.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform assessment pre-work, including reviewing supporting evidence and selecting assessment questions.
- Deliver assessments objectively and fairly, recording responses and observations accurately.
- Conduct feedback sessions with candidates and line managers, communicating assessment findings.
- Provide insights into discipline health at team, region, and global levels to leadership.
- Recommend and implement continuous improvements to the assessment process and materials.
- Participate in capability assessor networking and training sessions to maintain standardized processes.
- Ensure confidentiality of assessment materials and outcomes, addressing conformance issues professionally.

The Wells Engineering Capability Assessor is accountable for verifying the capability of our wells engineering staff through the Wells Engineering Capability Assessment (WECA) program, part of bp Wells overarching competency management system. In this role, the Wells Engineering Capability Assessor provides: Independent, consistent verification of skills proficiency across the global wells organisation Support to the personal development program of all wells engineers Information to inform the wells learning demand and development plans Information and insights the organisation needs to manage discipline health Evidence of our compliance with regulatory requirements for the competency management of wells personnel.
What you will do:
- Performs all assessment pre-work required, including review of all supporting evidence provided by the candidate and selection of appropriate assessment questions.
- Delivers assessment in accordance with agreed methodology, objectively and fairly for all candidates.
- Accurately records responses, information and observations during the assessment and uses these to support assessment results.
- Conducts effective feedback sessions with candidate and line manager, accurately communicating assessment findings, including skills gaps and development opportunities.
- Uses aggregated assessment findings to provide insights into discipline health at a team, region and global level to the Wells Integration leadership team.
- Recommends and performs continuous improvement opportunities of assessment process, questions and supporting materials.
- Participates in regular capability assessor networking/training/practice sessions to ensure a standardised assessment process is sustained.
- Assures the confidentiality of the assessment materials and outcomes in accordance with bp's Code of Conduct, recognising and acting on any conformance issues as they arise in a professional manner.
What you will have:
- Extensive experience delivering drilling, completions and/or interventions engineering and operations in a range of operating environments (onshore, offshore, deep-water).
- Comprehensive theoretical, technical and sometimes specialised knowledge associated with each of the skills associated with your core discipline.
- Demonstrated track record of application of technical knowledge to solve difficult well engineering problems and complete complex tasks.
- Known for their passion for building enduring capability.
- Demonstrated track record coaching, supervising and supporting skills development of wells engineers in your core discipline.
- Continually extends depth and breadth of own skills and knowledge.
- Demonstrates flexibility and adaptability.
- Must be able to tailor assessments to the individual's knowledge and experience levels.
- Monitors conditions (e.g. candidate anxiety, candidate/assessor fatigue, assessment environment etc) and able to adjust the assessment plan to account for changing conditions.
- Has the appropriate leadership skills to give difficult feedback in a constructive manner, dealing with and resolving conflict.
- Has the courage to challenge the status-quo and elevate expectations with respect to engineering skills development and capability.
- Demonstrates commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion and makes appropriate considerations in the delivery of assessments.
- This role has a global remit, working across multiple time zones. Successful candidate would need to be able to work flexibly to accommodate assessments in all bp Regions.
Who you will work with:
The Wells Engineering Capability Assessor will report to the Wells Manager -Discipline Capability within the Wells Integration team who will be the SPA for the delivery and governance of WECA. The Assessor will work within a team of assessors who possess the appropriate technical skills to cover the various wells disciplines (i.e. Drilling, Completions, Interventions and Subsea Wells). The Assessor will need to cultivate effective relationships with Regional Line Leadership to ensure the smooth delivery of WECA. The Assessor may also be asked to provide information and insights to the Wells VP Integration, wider wells LT and other key stakeholders e.g. Safety & Operational Learning
