Summary: The Microsoft M365 and Azure Administrator role is a contract position focused on supporting a local authority's Microsoft cloud environment, ensuring its smooth operation, optimization, and security. The administrator will work closely with technical leads to manage Microsoft 365, Azure, and related security services, addressing issues and supporting operational needs. This position requires a strong background in Microsoft technologies and security practices. The role is remote with occasional on-site meetings and has a duration of three months with potential for extension.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage and optimise Exchange Online, SharePoint, OneDrive, Teams and M365 Groups
  • Handle user onboarding and offboarding, licences, mailboxes and permissions
  • Resolve issues across Outlook, Teams, SharePoint, OneDrive and Office applications
  • Support Azure resources including VMs, storage, networking and cost control
  • Manage identity governance including Conditional Access, MFA, SSO and RBAC
  • Monitor sign-ins, alerts and identity risks
  • Connect and manage third-party applications using SAML/OAuth
  • Maintain the organisation’s compliance posture using the Microsoft 365 Compliance Centre
  • Manage DLP, retention, sensitivity labels and governance settings
  • Improve Secure Score on an ongoing basis
  • Administer Defender for Endpoint and ensure devices meet security baselines
  • Monitor phishing, malware and threat alerts in Defender for Office 365
  • Review and act on alerts in Defender for Cloud Apps
  • Manage policies for Windows, iOS and Android
  • Provide high-level support across all Microsoft cloud services
  • Resolve configuration issues, outages, identity conflicts and licensing problems
  • Deliver a secure and reliable Microsoft 365 and Azure estate
  • Provide clear documentation for processes and procedures
  • Regular reporting on Azure costs, security posture and Defender activity
  • Recommendations to strengthen architecture, governance and security

Key Skills:

  • 5+ years supporting Microsoft 365 and Azure in complex environments
  • Strong experience with Microsoft Defender and incident response
  • Expertise in Entra ID, Conditional Access, MFA and identity security
  • PowerShell and Azure administration skills
  • Solid Intune and device management background
  • Strong troubleshooting skills across cloud and hybrid setups
  • Understanding of zero-trust principles
  • Automation using Power Automate or Logic Apps (desirable)
  • Knowledge of Azure backups and disaster recovery (desirable)
  • Licensing optimisation (desirable)
  • Experience with identity lifecycle management (desirable)

Reporting to: M365 Architect and Systems Manager

This role is working for a local authority supporting a large public-sector organisation with the smooth running, optimisation and security of its Microsoft cloud environment. The role focuses on the administration and improvement of Microsoft 365, Azure, Entra ID, Intune and the wider Microsoft security stack. You’ll be working closely with internal technical leads to keep services running securely and efficiently, respond to issues, and support ongoing operational needs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Microsoft 365

  • Work with the external CSOC team on security incident clarification
