Summary: Backend Solution Architect required for a one-year, fully remote contract focused on retail/e-commerce. The role involves designing and evolving the Back End architecture of a high-scale eCommerce platform, ensuring performance, scalability, and availability. The architect will lead initiatives for modernization and collaborate with various teams to integrate Back End services. This position is outside IR35 and requires extensive experience in Back End engineering and architecture.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and evolve the Back End architecture of a high-scale eCommerce platform with a strong focus on performance, scalability, and availability.
  • Define architecture guidelines and establish best practices for Back End services and APIs.
  • Drive cloud-native solutions using Azure (preferred), or other cloud providers (GCP).
  • Lead the adoption and implementation of event-driven architecture.
  • Collaborate with engineering, product, and DevOps teams to ensure seamless integration and deployment of Back End services.
  • Own architectural decisions for systems involving SQL/NoSQL databases, Redis, Kafka, Solace, and other Back End technologies.
  • Lead initiatives for Back End modernization, microservices migration, and platform scalability.
  • Ensure security, compliance, and maintainability in Back End systems.
  • Evaluate and recommend new technologies, frameworks, and tools.

Key Skills:

  • 10+ years of experience in Back End engineering; at least 3 years in an architecture or senior technical leadership role.
  • Strong experience in designing and building systems using .NET (C#) or other Back End stacks, eg, Java or Node.js.
  • Deep expertise in cloud architecture, especially with Microsoft Azure (App Services, AKS, Functions, Storage, Service Bus, etc.).
  • Proven experience in event-driven architectures, using technologies like Kafka, Solace, or Azure Event Hubs.
  • Solid understanding of microservices, API design, REST/gRPC, and service meshes.
  • Strong experience with both SQL (eg, SQL Server, PostgreSQL) and NoSQL databases (eg, Cosmos DB, MongoDB).
  • Knowledge of caching strategies using Redis or similar technologies.
  • Experience in integration patterns - synchronous/asynchronous, pub-sub, middleware, etc.
  • Familiarity with DevOps practices and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
