Summary: The Lead Developer role involves providing technical leadership across multiple project teams to deliver high-quality digital services. The position requires mentoring developers, shaping project direction, and ensuring adherence to modern software standards. The role is hybrid, based in London, and is a 4-month contract inside IR35. The successful candidate will balance hands-on development with strategic guidance and coaching.

  • Ensure software and systems are built following modern standards and secure design principles.
  • Drive process improvement and contribute to community-wide knowledge sharing and best practice.
  • Collaborate closely with delivery managers, user researchers, and service designers to ensure user needs are met.
  • Oversee and manage knowledge transfer and handover to internal teams.

The Role: I am looking for an experienced Lead Developer to provide technical leadership across multiple project teams, helping to deliver high-quality, secure, and user-focused digital services. You’ll guide the way your team works, shape the technical direction of projects, and ensure that all solutions are built using modern, scalable, and maintainable approaches. You’ll play a pivotal role in mentoring and developing your team, fostering knowledge sharing, and embedding best practices.

You can balance hands-on development expertise with strategic guidance and coaching. Depending on your focus, we have two complementary roles available: Technical Lead You will: Be proficient in a wide range of technical systems and development practices Apply and promote modern standards in software engineering. Design and integrate complex systems with medium-to-high levels of risk and technical complexity. Ensure information security is embedded throughout solution design. Lead on programming, build standards, and continuous improvement of development processes. Champion user-centred design and ensure services are built around real user needs. Management Lead You will: Lead and develop teams to deliver service improvements and process optimisation. Oversee the implementation of capacity and availability management to meet business needs. Ensure the correct application of information security and data protection principles. Manage and support integration and testing across multiple systems. Collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders, representing both technical and user perspectives. Coach, mentor, and guide your teams in modern engineering practices.
