Summary: Harvey Nash is seeking a Java Developer for a public sector client in Edinburgh for a 10-week contract. The role involves upgrading applications from older Spring frameworks to the latest versions and requires specific Java and Spring experience. Candidates must also have a valid Disclosure Scotland check and will work two days a week on-site. The position is classified as inside IR35.
Key Responsibilities:
- Upgrade client applications from Spring 2.5 and Spring Security 2.0.8 to Spring Framework 5.3.x and Spring Security 5.8.x.
- Remediate security vulnerabilities and handle legacy systems.
- Collaborate on public-sector application remediation or cyber uplift projects.
Key Skills:
- Experienced in Java development (Java 8/11/17).
- Proficient in Spring Framework (MVC, transactions, Security).
- Proven migration experience from Spring 2.x/3.x to 5.x/6.x.
- Knowledge of Hibernate/JPA and upgrade to Hibernate 5.6.
- Experience with Maven, Jenkins CI/CD, and TomEE 8 deployment.
- Familiarity with Eclipse IDE.
- Understanding of Jakarta EE migration implications.
- Strong JSP/JSTL experience.
- Knowledge of Legacy Ant builds and hybrid build environments.

The Role
Upgrade our clients application from Spring 2.5 and Spring Security 2.0.8 to Spring Framework 5.3.x and Spring Security 5.8.x.
We are looking for the following experience:
- Experienced Java development (Java 8/11/17).
- Spring Framework (MVC, transactions, Security).
- Proven migration experience from Spring 2.x/3.x 5.x/6.x
- Hibernate/JPA, including upgrade to Hibernate 5.6.
- Experience remediating security vulnerabilities (CVE mitigation, CSRF/session handling).
- Strong JSP/JSTL experience and ability to retire Legacy Tiles layouts.
- Maven, Jenkins CI/CD, TomEE 8 deployment experience.
- Familiarity with Eclipse IDE (preferred toolchain).
- Prior experience in public-sector application remediation or cyber uplift projects.
- Awareness of future Jakarta EE (javax - jakarta) migration implications.
- Knowledge of Legacy Ant builds and hybrid build environments
