Summary: The Highway Engineer role involves managing the scoping and project management of recurring maintenance activities in highway engineering. The position requires collaboration with contractors to draft detailed scopes of work, ensuring safety and technical accuracy. The role is based in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, and is expected to be performed primarily on-site for three days a week. The contract duration is six months with a daily rate of £350 through an umbrella company.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead the drafting of scopes of works for recurring maintenance activities.
- Build costs for maintenance works from activity schedules.
- Include detailed technical and safety information in scopes of works.
- Project manage the repair process from drafting to completion, inspection, and payment.
- Ensure project management standards are met through training and spot-checking.
Key Skills:
- Degree in Civil Engineering, Construction, Highway Engineering, or equivalent experience.
- Professional membership (e.g., ICE, IHE, CIHT).
- NRSWA Streetworks supervisor training course.
- Strong project management skills.
- Ability to draft detailed technical documents.

Scoping of works & programme management
The Cyclical Maintenance Manager is responsible for leading the drafting of scopes of works for recurring maintenance activities and building costs for said works from activity schedules.
The scope of works needs to include detailed and specific technical information necessary for a contractor to carry out a repair on site in an accurate manner.
It must also include all necessary safety information to ensure the contractor is not exposed to unnecessary risk.
The scope of works will need to be drafted in partnership with our contractors and once agreed, the overall repair process needs to be project managed through to completion, inspection and payment.
While this role is also the responsibility of the wider area team post holders, the Cyclical Maintenance Manager has overall responsibility for ensuring scope of works and the subsequent project management is to the necessary standard.
This will include a training and spot-checking regime.
