Summary: This role is for an Analytical Technician at bp's low carbon innovation centre in Hull, focusing on providing analytical expertise to support research and product development in low carbon technologies. The position involves conducting laboratory analyses, operating equipment, and contributing to safety and efficiency improvements. The technician will work independently and ensure compliance with safety and quality standards. This is a 12-month contract position based on-site at Saltend Chemicals Park.
Key Responsibilities:
- Delivering safe and compliant experimental operations, contributing to the development of a proactive safety culture.
- Undertaking laboratory analysis using a wide range of analytical techniques, international standard methods, and proprietary procedures to generate high quality, timely results.
- Daily running of laboratory equipment and apparatus, including setup, calibration, quality checks, and basic problem solving.
- Helping identify and implement opportunities for continuous improvement and efficiency gains.
Key Skills:
- Experience of working in industry or commercial analytical laboratories.
- Ability to work independently in a laboratory environment with attention to detail and accurate test data generation.
- Experience of following laboratory risk assessments, COSHH assessments, and control of work procedures.
- Experience of following analytical test methods.
- Experience in preparation of calibration standards from certified reference materials and understanding of serial dilutions and calibration methods.
- Formal qualifications relevant to laboratory operations.
- Experience of analysis of complex mixtures such as oil, petrochemical, and/or biofeedstock samples.
- Experience with techniques such as auto-titrations, ICP, elemental analysis by combustion methods, physical property analysis, and liquid phase extractions and separations.

Role Overview: This is an opportunity for an analytical technician to join our global team of skilled analytical practitioners who provide data and insight reaching across bp – from research and innovation of low carbon technologies to critical business support for our global value chains. The role is in the analytical chemistry team at bp’s low carbon innovation centre in Hull. This team is responsible for providing proprietary analytical expertise and services in support of research, product development, deployment and operational excellence, primarily to underpin bp’s efforts in process development, including low carbon refining technologies.

- Experience of following analytical test methods
- Experience of and ability to demonstrate preparation of calibration standards from certified reference materials, understanding of serial dilutions and internal and external calibration methods.
- Formal qualifications relevant to laboratory operations.
- Experience of analysis of complex mixtures such as oil, petrochemical and/or biofeedstock (e.g. fats, oils and greases) samples.
